Prepare this hearty, savory breakfast strata the night before for a warm, delicious, and stress-free start to your Christmas morning. This crowd-pleasing casserole features sausage and Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 1 pound) sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage, cooked and drained
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange the sourdough bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  2. Sprinkle the cooked sausage and both types of cheese over the bread layer.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until fully combined.
  4. Slowly pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and sausage layers, pressing down gently to soak the bread.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the plastic wrap.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a truly stress-free morning, assemble the entire casserole the day before and keep it covered in the refrigerator.
  • If you use leaner sausage, you may need to add a touch more milk to the egg mixture to ensure full saturation.
  • This recipe serves 8 to 10 people, making it ideal for a holiday gathering.
