Make this easy Tater Tot Casserole for a comforting, family-favorite dinner. This simple recipe uses ground beef, creamy mushroom sauce, and a crispy tater tot topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 bag (32 ounces) frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the ground beef and onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and pepper into the skillet with the beef mixture. Heat through for about 2 minutes.
  4. Spread the beef mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
  6. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the tater tots are golden brown and crisp.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken soup.
  • If you want a cheeseburger flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of mustard powder to the beef mixture.
  • You can assemble this entire casserole ahead of time, cover it, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. Add 10 minutes to the bake time if cooking straight from the refrigerator.
